Cyanotype

Cyanotype is a very simple alternative process and is easy to learn and use outside of the darkroom. It requires very few materials, time, and patience compared to the black and white processes and other alternative processes. Cyanotype doesn't use sensitized silver to hold the image but uses iron compounds to set the image. Despite the simplicity of cyanotype, you must be incredible careful with the solution(s). You can wear gloves but be sure to not be working on multiple processes at the same time while handling cyanotype solution(s) to avoid fatal mixtures. Refer to reliable reasources on which processes can be used together for one image and what chemicals to avoid while using this process. One of the best resources has been compiled into a book that presents a large range of alternative processes by Christopher James, called The book of Alternative Photographic Processes

The photographic chemicals used in the lab should not cause any problems if they are handled carefully. If you experience any sensitivity to the chemicals take extra precautions to reduce exposure. If you are pregnant, or become pregnant while you plan to work with photographic chemistry, stop and seek a professional opinion for your safety.
